How to become a Quitter

Anyone wishing to join the Quitters Scooter Club must be sponsored by an existing club member.
This means that a member of the club must think well enough of you to stand up for you and take responsibility for your actions. This is a significant hurdle to overcome, and it is meant to be. No member of the club is likely to sponsor someone whom they do not know and / or do not have confidence in.

If you don’t know any of us, then your first step is to spend some time getting to know the club before you can even consider being sponsored. Strangers who show up and whose first question is “How do I join” are likely to be summarily rejected. Come to some meetings, hang out, and get to know us. If someone in the club takes a liking to you, they’ll tap you on the shoulder and ask if you’re interested in being sponsored.

If you already know someone in the club and are close enough to them that you feel you can broach the topic, go for it. If you’re unsure, though, probably best to let us come to you.

Prospective members must pledge to the club for at least six months before they can be considered for full membership.
Once a club member has agreed to sponsor you, you will become a prospective member, or pledge. You will remain a pledge for at least six months, during which time the club will be actively evaluating you. During this time, your sponsor will advise you on the finer points of becoming a full member, and help guide you through the process. Your sponsor will also act as your chief advocate to the rest of the club, and will have to defend his or her decision to sponsor you. Thus, it is imperative that you have a good relationship with your sponsor.

Prospective members must have excellent riding skills.
The Quitters pride ourselves on our ability to ride, and we will not accept any prospective member who we feel would detract from that. During your pledge period, you will be graded on how well you ride in a variety of situations. Ideally, we’d like to see you ride on one or more occasions, with your sponsor and several other members present. This requirement can be waived by the existing members, but we would only do so if we were already very familiar with your skill level.

Prospective members have a maximum of one year to make a positive impression on the existing club members.
After one year, if you haven’t wowed us enough for us to make you a full member, you should consider yourself washed out. Your sponsor will be responsible for making sure the rest of the club is aware of your timeline. If it hasn’t happened after one year, it’s simply not going to happen.

Prospective members may be terminated by their sponsor at any time.
If your sponsor feels there is no hope of you becoming a full member, they can terminate further proceedings at any time during the pledge process.

Prospective members must pass a unanimous vote to become full members.
Your sponsor will organize this vote at his or her discretion between the six month and one year mark.
