Historical Footnote
The Quitters have been meeting in the same location for over 100 years, although the place has undergone a few name changes over the years. In 1908, after quitting the San Francisco Bicycle Compnay, the Quitters needed a place to meet and discuss club business. Most of the ex-employees lived in the Dogpatch and Potrero neighborhoods, and so location was key.
They found the perfect spot in what was then called Hilda’s Saloon, built only a year before by the Salvotti family. Hilda’s was a boarding house and drinking establishment, and Hilda made her own wine down in the basement. The Quitters, naturally, drank most of it.
Hilda passed away in 1926, but the saloon (now rechristened Salvotti’s) was kept going in the hands of her sons until 1975, at which point it left the hands of the Salvotti family. Several owners (and several names) later, in 1989, the saloon was sold to the current owner and christened The Connecticut Yankee, the name by which it is known today.
